Two men were arrested and contraband cigarettes worth R600 000 seized in Mitchells Plain, the City of Cape Town said on Monday.
Safety and security spokesman Richard Bosman said a man in his early 20s was arrested at a house in Rocklands around 10am on Sunday.
Police seized 553 cartons of Pacific cigarettes and 47 cartons of Chicago cigarettes. The arrest followed a tip-off from the public.
A short while later, a second man, also in his 20s, was arrested at his take-away shop in central Mitchells Plain on the same charge. Bosman said 50 packets of Pacific cigarettes were confiscated.
The men were expected to appear in Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court later on Monday.
