The DHL Stormers ran in seven tries to beat the Boland Cavaliers 45–14 at a sweltering and packed Boland Stadium, in a warm-up game for the new season.
Stormers coach Allister Coetzee used the game to take a look at a lot of the younger and new players in the group, as well as some combinations. The 51-man squad will be cut in the next few weeks and several players are pushing hard for inclusion.
“I was pleased with the outing” said Coetzee. “The game was physical and played with intensity which is what we need right now. Whilst there is clearly still a lot to do, for this stage of the season and the conditions I was happy with the physicality and accuracy both on defence and offense. I am happy with the group at the moment and the depth we have. “
The Stormers next take on the Lions (Fri 27 Jan) and the Cheetahs (Sat 4 Feb) in the DHL Pre-season series at DHL Newlands.
The Cape side will then travel to PE to take on the Kings on Februray 11 in their last warm-up fixture before taking on the Hurricanes in the opening Super Rugby fixture on February 25 at Newlands.
Media reports this morning that the annual DHL Stormers pre-season fixtures have been cancelled are incorrect. The DHL Stormers will play the Lions and the Cheetahs in Cape Town as per the release circulated on 18 January (copied below). DHL replaces NEO Africa as the sponsor and the series has been renamed the DHL Pre-Season Series.
COPY OF RELEASE CIRCULATED ON 18 JANUARY:
The withdrawal of the Sharks from the annual pre-season Cape Town based tournament and a change in sponsor will see the DHL Stormers take on the MTN Lions and the Toyota Cheetahs in the “DHL Pre-Season Series”.
The 2 fixtures will both take place at DHL Newlands, with the Stormers taking on the Lions in the opener on Friday 27 January and then the Cheetahs on Saturday 4 February. The games form an important part of each of the teams preparation for the rigours of Vodacom Super Rugby.
Charles Brewer, Head of Sub-Saharan Africa for DHL said, “The Newlands Faithful are hungry for rugby again and DHL are very happy to play an integral role in delivering these games to Cape Town. Whilst all the teams have been hard at work on fitness and rugby specifics, actual game time is a crucial part of pre-season preparation. The series facilitates this, whilst giving our supporters the opportunity to see the DHL Stormers in action against some top local opposition. We will also be utilising a game to bring some of our supporters that have not had the privilege of attending a live Stormers game at DHL Newlands to the venue.”
DHL Pre-Season Series fixtures at DHL NEWLANDS RUGBY STADIUM are as follows:
· DHL STORMERS vs MTN LIONS : Fri 27 January (19h00)
