A man was killed and two children seriously injured when a car crashed into the back of a school in Elsies River on Friday morning, the Cape Town fire and rescue service said.
“The motor vehicle crashed into a school wall, causing it significant damage. The male driver died and a male passenger sustained minor injuries,” spokesman Theo Layne said.
“Two children who were passengers were seriously injured. One of them was airlifted to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and the other was taken by ambulance.”
The accident happened around 11am at Jan Kloppers Primary School.
No pupils were injured.
Captain Frederick van Wyk said driver of a red Honda lost control and “went through the back gate of the school, crashing into the stairs next to a class”.
Layne said that contrary to reports, police had not been chasing the car before it crashed.
“There is a suspicion that the driver was speeding. Why he was speeding we have no clue,” he said.
