CAPE TOWN – A deputy principal has been shot dead outside his home in Mitchell’s Plain, the Western Cape education department said on Friday.

Spokesman Bronagh Casey said Linga Mafu was shot on Thursday night.

Further details about the incident were not immediately available.

Western Cape police spokesman Captain FC Van Wyk declined to give details about the incident over the phone.

He asked that questions be emailed to the police instead.

Mafu, who was a deputy principal at Ludwe Ngamlana High School, is survived by his wife and two children.

Education MEC Donald Grant expressed his condolences to Mafu’s family and friends.

“This is a senseless and tragic loss of life and it is my sincere wish that the police bring the perpetrators to book as soon as possible.”

He said the department would do “everything possible” to assist the school at this time.
